Ace Boggess

“But Where Is That Ambition Now?”

—Albert Goldbarth, “Ridiculous Trade”

What do we want? A Nobel Prize.

When do we want it? Before

we’ve earned it or grown too old

to spend the money on a lavish life

or wear that heavy medallion around our necks.

What do we want? A key to the city.

When do we want it? Before

shops have been looted,

leaving us with cans of sauerkraut &

bags of frozen peas.

What do we want? To be named CEO of America.

When do we want it? Sooner

the better. No starting in the mailroom,

working our way through seventy levels

of brass knuckles & middle management.

What do we want? To hear a song

we used to love, although we can’t

recall its name or why it brought us happiness.

When do we want it? Before

music turns to ashes in our ears.
